Alumni Donate Time and Energy to Greater Erie Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit ecumenical Christian ministry founded on the conviction that every man, woman, and child should have a decent, safe, and affordable place to live. Although a Christian ministry, anyone may apply to the program or volunteer. The Greater Erie Area Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of International. Its mission is to change lives and communities and build hope through simple, decent homeownership in partnership with volunteers and community support. This is accomplished by building homes in partnership with qualifying partner families and the community. The homes are then sold to the partner families at no profit and with zero percent interest mortgages.
Part of our alumni chapter’s mission is community service and volunteering for Habitat for Humanity fits nicely in that mission.
While the latest home is nearing completion, Habitat needed help building an 8’ x 12’ shed to house lawn equipment at the new house. Eight Penn State Alumni volunteered their time one Saturday morning in March to help build that shed. The shed was built indoors at the Habitat for Humanity shop and was later disassembled and transported to the new house where it was reassembled. In addition to building the shed, we stained doors for the interior of the house.
Each volunteer learned something new about construction and working together helped build closer relationships with each other. The size of our crew was limited by COVID protocols; perhaps next year a larger crew of volunteers could be accommodated.

Penn State Behrend Shining Star Program
We participated in Penn State Behrend's Shining Star initiative to give presents to 100 children. We adopted 10 children total. Your board of directors individually donated gifts to needy kids and the chapter adopted two children.
Here are the 2 Chapter contributed gifts:
Mia (8 year old girl): She wanted a tablet and a winter coat and boots
Abdullah (12 year old boy): He wanted sports clothing and a comforter
