Why are you involved with the Lake Erie Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association?
I love all things Penn State and I like to be involved in all things Penn State. My biggest reason for staying involved in the LEC is knowing that the proceeds from our events go towards Penn State scholarships for local students. It’s nice knowing that we are helping the next generation of Penn Staters.
What is your favorite Penn State moment?
My most memorable moment was when I visited Penn State many years after I graduated and got to meet Bob White, who now runs Beaver Stadium and had played on the 1986 National Championship Football Team. I knew most of the players on that team because I graduated in 1986. When he first introduced himself, he didn’t say that he was on the team or that he even graduated from Penn State. I kept wondering if he was the same Bob White that was on the team back then. He asked each of us when we graduated and when I said 1986, he said he did too and that he was on the team. I immediately yelled out “I thought that was you!” Remind me to tell you about the time I met Franco Harris! ;-)
What do you like most about your career?
I like the versatility of my career. Being a mechanical engineer gives me the ability to do a wide variety of jobs and so I’m never bored.
What are your hobbies?
I love boating on Lake Erie and I play the clarinet in a local community band but most of all I love watching Penn State football!!
Where else do you volunteer?
I help lead the annual NWPA Autism Walk each year. I’m also very involved in local STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) events for middle school and high school girls throughout the local area. I volunteer for many activities at Presque Isle Yacht Club and my community band plays at nursing homes and in local parks. I stay busy.
What is your favorite restaurant in Erie/Crawford/Venango?
Avonia Tavern
One piece of career advice to recent Penn State graduates:
Go after the career you want and don’t wait for it to come to you. Also, do something outside your comfort zone. You’ll be amazed at how much you learn when you do.
Why should alumni get involved with LEC-PSAA?
It’s a great way to stay connected to Penn State, to network with other Penn Staters as well as give back to the community by hosting events to raise funds for scholarships.
Why should alumni meet you?
With all the activities I’m involved with, I know a lot of people in the area and have connections just about everywhere. I’m also a recruiter at Penn State for GE and can offer advice on how to get that next job!
